Fletcher A. Blake was born August 5, 1835 in Fairview, Erie County, Pennsylvania.
He was educated at South Dansville, N.Y. In 1857, he went to Iowa, and in 1858 he enlisted in a company of State Rangers for service against the Sioux Indians on the frontier. In 1859, he was promoted to be the Captain of the company by Gov. Kirkwood. In 1861, he went into the army of the Potomac, served two years and one month as a member of Co. A, 11th Penna. Calvary, and was commissioned Lieutenant of that company by Gov. Curtin. Resided for disability in 1863, at Portsmouth, Virginia. He married Oct. 5th, 1864, at Okoboji, Iowa, with Julia Prescott. (She was born at Sheboygan Falls, Mich., Dec 6th, 1846.) He was a member of the Iowa Legislature 1871-72. In 1873, he removed to Texas, thence in 1878 to New Mexico. He speaks Spanish fluently, and was appointed by Gov. Sheldon, successively, Major, Lieut-Col., and Col. of 1st Reg. of State troops. In Nov., 1885, was commissioned Col. of 3d Regt. State Calgary, and served in the field in command of a detachment composed of this Regt. and also of the 1st Regt. of Infantry against the Apaches in the Indian Wars. In 1886, was commissioned by Gov. Ross, Inspector-General of the State troops; re-commissioned in 1890 by Gov. Prince, and served four years longer as such.
