James was born in Wythe Co. and his parents were never married. Wythe Co. court records contain accounts of how his parents were indicted by the grand jury for 'cohabiting.' His siblings from this union are Stephen Mahood (moved to Indiana, then Wisconsin) and Nancy (who married Michael Cline). After mother Telitia's death in about 1799, James and Stephen "Cordell" were "bound out" by the "overseers of the poor" to James McCampbell. A short time later, their guardianship was transferred to Alexander Mahood. This begs a question as to whether James McCampbell or Alexander Mahood was the father of James and Stephen. In either case, James was raised as James Mahood by his father Alexander.
After Telitia's death, Alexander Mahood married Lucinda Galloway in 1799 and the couple had 11 known children. James Mahood married Nancy Mary Wilson on 7 Sep 1818 in Wythe Co. The couple had 10 known children: Cynthia (md. Rev. Stephen Rhudy), Elizabeth (never married), Angeline (md. Jesse Peery), Matilda (md John Rosenbaum), Alexander (md Margaret Spracher), John (md Louisa E Rogers, moved to Pottawattamie Co., Iowa - these are my gg-grandparents), Margaret (d. age 3, 1833), Rev. James (md. Amanda Greever, they are buried in Ceres, Sharon Lutheran Church Cemetery), Mary Clementine (md. 1 Patterson 2. Robert Downs, moved to Benton Co., Iowa), Stephen (md. Margaret Greever). Angeline, Matilda, Alexander and Stephen are buried in Burkes Garden Lutheran Church Cemetery (probably other children are buried here as well but I did not locate their graves on my 2008 visit).
Included in the sibling list below are several half-siblings.
