Maude Edna Hay Nelson was the daughter of Andrew Hay and Mary Cameron. She was born and raised in Crosby, ND. Maude was the owner of the Nifty Shop, a woman's clothing shop in Crosby until her retirement. She loved to sew all sorts of dresses and gowns for her daughter, Mary Ann.

Maude married on April 14, 1938 Walter Christian Nelsen, son of Christian Nelsen and Anne Christensen of Kenmare, ND. They had three children:
