Dr. Alberta R. Anderson, a role model for many business educators and secretaries in West Virginia and throughout the state and nation, died August 18, 2008.
Her motto that is remembered by every student or teacher with whom she came in contact was "If it is to be, it is up to me." She instilled motivation, work ethic and an enjoyment of life into every presentation or seminar she taught, offering workshops and courses with great enthusiasm and professionalism.
Dr. Anderson, a WVU Tech Professor Emeritus, retired in 1978 after 25 years of service at Tech, where she was the chair of Business Education and Secretarial Studies. In 1977 she was named the year's Outstanding Educator by the West Virginia Business Education Association. She was active in many professional organizations throughout her teaching career, including the Southern Business Education Association and the National Business Education Association. A native of Smithers, Dr. Anderson was a Tech graduate herself. She received her master's in education from the University of Kentucky and her doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado. She received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1979. After her retirement, Dr. Anderson continued to serve Tech through the Office Technology Management Advisory Committee and the establishment of the Alberta Anderson Scholarship Fund. In 1996, she was named the Outstanding Advisory Committee Member of the Year by the West Virginia Vocation Education Association. Dr. Anderson also served as visiting professor at Memphis State, Central Washington University and Indiana State University after her retirement from Tech. While a resident of Hugheston, Dr. Anderson was active in Montgomery Presbyterian Church and many civic organizations, including the Montgomery Women's Club. In her extensive travels, she visited all but a very few countries. She enjoyed her life and shared that joy with everyone she came in contact with.
Dr. Anderson was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Smithers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bea and Albert Ray Anderson, and her brother, Willis Anderson.
She is survived by a sister, Midge Burke; nephew, Brent and wife, Pam Anderson, of Hugheston; and nieces, Rosalie and husband, Rick Thompson, of Bluffton, S.C., Willa and husband, Gene Haynes, of Columbia, Md., JoAnn and husband, Keith Batman, of St. Albans, and Marsha and husband, Rick Burke, of Glasgow; and many great-nieces and -nephews.
Per her instructions, a celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Hughes Creek Community Church with Pastor Gary Tucker officiating. Burial will follow at Montgomery Memorial Park, London.
Following the service, the celebration will continue at The Haven.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cooke Funeral Home, Cedar Grove, and one hour prior to the services at the church.
