He was 6 ft. 3 in. tall with blue eyes and dark hair [military records]
According to family records, at the age of 18, Shelton and three of his brothers enlisted in the 36 Regiment Virginia Infantry, Confederate Army. The 36th Regt. was under the command of Col McCauslin. During the Civil War, at the Battle of Piedmont (also called New Hope), he was wounded in the right foot and his leg had to be amputated just below the knee. The bullet that wounded him was in the possession of his son, Walker Henderson.
At the age of 31, he married Elizabeth Alice Hanna and had 9 children: Louanna, Nancy, Rosa, Ella, Johnny, Elsie, Elzada, Virginia, and Walker.
He died at age 74 in Strange Creek, West Virginia.
His tombstone has 2 pieces: a base with the family name "Henderson" and a top piece with his given names and years of birth and death. It appears the top piece came off at some point and was reinstalled backwards so it faces the opposite direction as the base. It faces away from the church and in the opposite direction of all other tombstones, including his wife's. The first time I went to the cemetery I didn't see the writing on the back. When I returned 2 years later my brother was behind the tombstone and to my surprise started reading the name and dates aloud. Big laugh!
