GREENSBORO — Mr. John Monroe Armfield, U.S.A.F. (Ret.), 84, died Saturday, August 23, 2008, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday.
Mr. Armfield was born on May 12, 1924, in Guilford County, son of the late Belle and John E. Armfield. He served in the Air Force from 1942-1970 and saw combat with the 8th Air Force during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Palmyra Masonic Lodge in Dunn and First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.
Upon retirement, John lived in Fayetteville and Dunn before retiring to Greensboro in 2002.
John will be remembered for his love, kindness and unfailing sense of humor. He was greatly loved and will be missed.
He was a loving husband of Anne Fitchett Armfield; father of Jan A. Shields, Phillip E. Armfield and Melanie A. Mahone (Danny); brother to Millicent A. Marshall (Jack) and Polly A. Campbell (Buck). He is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
