From 1922 to 1926 he was a justice of the peace , and in 1924 was elected mayor of the city, serving a regular four year term. At the same time he served as judge (1924) of the juvenile and domestic relations court for Rockingham County, continuing in this office until 1932. In 1933 he was appointed commissioner of revenue to finish the term of R. Lee Woodson, who died; and in the fall of 1933 he was elected to the same office, in which he continues at the present, having been re-elected in 1937 and 1941.
When the local Kiwanis Club was organized about 1922 Mr. DeVier became one of the charter members. Later, for several years, he served the club as it's secretary, and for one term was president. For some time he was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church and for a number of years served on the board of deacons. The duties of his office as commissioner of revenue for the city do not allow him much time for diversion or recreation, though he is fond of fishing and hunting and indulges these inclinations occasionally as he has opportunity. His reading is limited mostly to topics of the time in current periodicals.
On July 26, 1921, Mr. DeVier married Miss Maisie Lavinia Morgan of Brunswick, Georgia, the marriage taking place in that city. Mrs. DeVier is a daughter of Lemuel T. Morgan and his wife, a native of Indiana, whose name before marriage was Livia Allen Crozier. Mr. Morgan was a civil engineer and served as superintendent of public construction in the city of Brunswick. Mrs. DeVier attended Converse College, Spartanburg, S.C. and here the State Teachers (now Madison) College in Harrisonburg, graduating from this institution in June, 1921. Mr. and Mrs. DeVier are the parents of four children: Mary Morgan, born August 12, 1922; Sheffy Lewis Jr., born April 15, 1925; Jane Morgan, born December 14, 1927; and Richard Morgan, born December 13, 1930. Mary Morgan graduated from Harrisonburg High School, attended Madison College, the Pan American School in Richmond, and is now employeed at Jacksonville, Fla. Sheffy, Jr. is a student in Harrisonburg High School and expects to be inducted into the U.S. Army in the near future. The two younger children are also students in Harrisonburg High School.
