From a typewritten paper (no author given):

"George W. Cox was an old Veteran Union Soldier of the war of the Rebellion who enlisted the 12th day of August 1861 as a Private in Company B., 5th Reg't of Kansas Calvary for three years or during the war- was honorably discharged Sept. 3rd, 1864 at Ft. Leavenworth and re-enlisted on the 20th of March 1865 to serve one year or during the war and was honorably discharged on the 19th day of March 1866, at Indianapolis, Ind. In all he served four years and 1 month. He was born June 26, 1840 in Whitley County, State of Kentucky. He made a faithful and brave soldier, was shot through the left lung in a fierce fought battle the bullet going in a few inches to the left of the center of his breast and lodges against his backbone. His widow is now in possession of the ball"
