Correspondence of the Courier - New York, May 22, 1858
James P Allaire, the founder of the establishment for the manufacturer of steam engines and machinery, known as the Allaire Works, died this week, aged 73 years. Starting as a lad to learn a trade, he served his apprenticeship in the Novelty Works. In due time, Mr Allaire set up for himself in the world, and succeeded in founding the establishment which bears his name, and which has long since rivalled the great opposition concern - the Novelty Works - from which he graduated. The reputation of the Allaire Works was made by its founder, and the engines turned out by it have given dignity to American labor and safety to steam navigation.

Mr Allaire gave up his connexion with the establishment some years ago. He was, however, succeeded by a son in law, Mr Secor, in whose hands the works have lost none of their honorable prestige. The family of Allaires is a notable race of mechanics. Each started in life choosing his own trade and all have accumulated fortunes.

Anthony J Allaire, a brother of James P, follows the business, in which he commenced over forty years ago - that of plumbing.

The funeral of Mr James P Allaire takes place tomorrow.

James Peter Allaire, late proprietor of the Allaire Steam Engine Works of New York, at the Howell Works, Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Mr Allaire was born in New York in the year 1785.

Mr Allaire had the honor of constructing the first marine steam engine ever built in the United States, and which was put into the steamship, Savannah. This was the first steamship that ever crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and whose history and extensive voyaging abroad are well-known.

Mr Allaire built and run on his own account the first steams to Charleston, SC from New York. The machinery is now universally used on all boilers for steamships and boats was the invention of Mr Allaire.
