Sarah's father's name was Adam J. Conder and her mother, Sarah Jane (Fulk) Conder died shortly after her birth. She had two older brothers, Joseph and John. She was raised by Charles and Lucinda "Cindy" Inman. She called them "Uncle Charlie and Aunt Cindy" and her father later married Cindy's sister Minerva (Holliday) and moved to Missouri. They were subsistence farmers and lived in a log house. Sarah was married to Frank Duncan just before her fourteenth birthday and gave birth to her first child, Ora, before she was fifteen. Frank and Sarah had two more children, Lester and Jiles A.
