Alfred Andrew Fulton

Alfred Andrew Fulton, 86, retired, of Elm Circle, and a merchant of Hogansburg for many years, died at 10:45 o'clock Sunday night in the Alice Hyde hospital in Malone where he had been taken on the preceding Friday.

Mr. Fulton suffered a fall on August 26, at his home, sustaining bruises and shock. He was taken to the hospital in Malone at that time and he seemed to recover from the effects of the fall. He was brought back to his home in Massena but last Friday it was necessary to take him back to the hospital. Death was due to lobar pneumonia.

Mr. Fulton was born August 27, 1848, in Hogansburg, a son of Alfred and Elizabeth Mills Fulton. The family was among the earliest settlers in that community and established a general store there, which became one of the leading commercial establishments of that section of Franklin county in the early days and so continued through the later years as Hogansburg became a larger village. He grew to manhood, attending the schools there and at Middlebury College, also at Cornell University in 1879-1881, in the early history of that institution. While at Cornell he affiliated with Delta Upsilon fraternity. Returning to Hogansburg after completing his studies, he engaged in partnership with his father in the general merchandise business. The father was born in 1814 and died in 1898. After the father's death, Mr. Fulton carried on the business along until about 15 years ago when he retired and moved to Massena.

June 3, 1885 Mr. Fulton married Miss Florence Dewey of Fort Covington. Mrs. Fulton died June 28, 1934.

Surviving are the following children, Alfred Mills Fulton, of Malone, Louis of Auburn, Philip of Alexandria Bay, Dr. Elizabeth Fulton, Robert Fulton and Cyril Fulton, all of Massena, and Miss Florence Fulton of Ithaca, also three grandchildren, and one nephew and six nieces, children of his sister, the late Mrs. W.J. Hamilton.

The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from St. John's church, of which he was a member, and burial was made in Pine Grove cemetery. Rev. Louis Van Ess, rector of St. John's church, conducted the services.
