Mrs. Virginia Basmajian, widow of John Basmajian, died on Saturday April 12, 1980, in Massena Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Basmajian was born in Armenia on January 20, 1892, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Artune Bochalian. Married in Armenia, her first husband died in the Turkish massacre in which more than 2 1/2 million Armenians were killed. She escaped with her son and migrated to the United States where she met and married John Basmajian in New York City on August 20, 1920. They later moved to Massena. On April 12, 1969 her husband, John, died of injuries sustained in a truck-car mishap on St. Regis Blvd., Massena.

Mr. and Mrs. Basmajian operated a food market on Park Avenue in Massena for over 40 years. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Basmajian resided with her children and had recently been residing at 20 Middlebury Avenue in Massena. Surviving Mrs. Basmajian are a son, Walter, of Massena; three daughters, Mrs. Herman (Suzanne) Natowitz, Potsdam; Mrs. Aram Shnorick Markarian and Mrs. Nate (Violet) Agnello, East Providence, RI; a sister, Mrrs. Harry Murian, of New York City; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews. A son, Michael, died in September, 1962.

Mrs. Basmajian was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the American-Armenian Community Center and was a charter member of the Massena Armenian Red Cross.
