Carlys V. Best, 83, of Elkader, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home, Strawberry Point, following a long illness. He was born August 22, 1924, in Read Township, to Emil and Hattie (Kelpien) Best. Carlys graduated from Elkader High School.

He was united in marriage to Ila Mae Henning on April 9, 1950, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. Two sons were born to this union.

Carlys farmed near Clayton Center. He loved antique tractors and going to tractor shows. He owned his father's 1919 Allis-Chalmers 612 tractor. He also enjoyed attending the draft horse auction held yearly at Waverly. Carlys enjoyed going to Texas and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his son Dale (Laurie) Best, Zephyr, TX; grandson Mitchell (Nicole) Best, Comanche, TX; great-grandson, Trenton Best; step-great-granddaughter, Bayleigh Sullivan; step-grandsons, Joseph Sullivan, Jackson, MS, Joshua Sullivan, Early, TX and many friends.

Carlys was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on March 10, 2005 and his son Larry on October 2, 2007.
