William R. Grier was born at Peoria, Illinois, on October 23, 1869, the son of D.P. Grier and Anna McKinney. His father, who attained the rank of general in the Civil War, was involved in the grain business in Illinois. William was the third-born of his parents' seven children.

The Grier family moved from Peoria to St. Louis, where William attended Smith Academy and Washington University. In 1889 he moved to Denver. It was there that he met and married Mary Stewart, the wedding taking place on May 6, 1896. They made their home for a time at Cripple Creek, Colorado, and then moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1909, where he founded the Grier Lumber Company. He retired from the business in 1947.
He died at his home in Cheyenne on September 8, 1951. He was survived by his son Ralph and three daughters, Mary (Hanes), Susan (Laughlin) and Anna (Walker). He was preceded in death by his wife (1946) and an infant son (1902).
