Jesse was the son of John Henry Smith and Susan Elliot Watt Smith. He married Mary Lovestie Ivey on August 9, 1891 in Walker County, Alabama and they had eleven children: William Lacy, Sarah Dovie, Prince Albert, Marion Henry, Minnie Mae, Roy Wayland, James Early, Myrtis Marie, Lindsay Leon, Doyle Adus, and Talmadge Dois.
