C.E. "Doc" Swango, 91, of Bloomington died on Saturday evening at his residence. He was born on May 13, 1917, in Monroe County, the son of Walter and Ella (Clay) Swango. He was a retired employee of Bloomington Limestone Co. and previously worked with Hoadley Quarries. He was an Army veteran of World War II where he received a Purple Heart. He participated in five major campaigns in the European Theater with an artillery division. During his period of service he was involved with the Normandy invasion, Northern France, the Rhineland and helped in the liberation of concentration camps. He was a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post #0450, Disabled Veterans of America, Stanford Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite of Indianapolis.

Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Charles "Whitey" and Jane Swango of Bloomington, and his grandchildren, Steve and Julie Sparks, Nigel Sparks and Dillon Sparks, all of Cincinnati, Shawn and Danny Henline, Ezekial and Stephanie Henline, Eli Henline and Jessica Henline, all of Bloomington. He will be very sadly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fidella "Toobie" (Heltonburg) Swango, in 2002; two sisters, Martha Smith and Betty White; one stepson, Jack Sparks; and one brother in infancy, John N. Swango.

Private family services will be held at Valhalla Memory Gardens with Tom Ellsworth officiating. The Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Graveside Rites.
