Rubye M. Baldwin, 84, died of heart failure Feb. 17, 2005 at Clarksdale Nursing Center. She was a resident of Clarksdale.
Mrs. Baldwin was born Aug. 3, 1920 in Coahoma to the late C.T. and Lurie Palmer McCandless in Chulahoma. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and AARP.
Mrs. Baldwin enjoyed poodles, needlepoint, experimenting with new recipes and diamonds. She ws a graduate of Bobo High School in Clarksdale and AMF Management and Marketing Institute in Fort Worth, Texas. She was an employee of Coahoma County Bank and Trust Company, starting as a file clerk before retiring as vice president and special services officer. She was honored for serving over 40 years with the company.
She held distinguished positions such as Mississippi Group Chairman, Southern Regional Vice President, Transportation Chairman and National Recording Secretary in the National Association of Bank Women, Southern-Southeastern Joint Regional Conference and NABW Convention in Washington.
She organized and served as the first president of the Zonta Club of Clarksdale. She was a charter member, past president and exemplar degree holder of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She was a member of the Clarksdale Business and Professional Women's Club, serving as president, and was chosen as woman of achievement in 1970 and boss of the year in 1984.
She was a member of the board of directors of the Clarksdale Women's Club and co-program chairman. She served as secretary-treasurer of Clarksdale Speech and Hearing Center and member of the board and treasurer of the Community Concerts Association.
She served on the Military Manpower Commission during World War II and was one of the first women to serve on the Federal Grand Jury in Oxford. She was also a member of the Advisory Council of the Small Business Association, Coahoma County Chamber of Commerce and Delta Council.
She was a a charter member of Oakhurst Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Baldwin.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Oakridge Cemetery with Rev. Bill Gleason officiating. Visitation is Sunday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Nowell Funeral Home.
