Charles was the son of John and Abigail (Stebbins) McKnight. He and wife Anna née Congdon removed to Madrid prior to 1820 with other McKnight family members. He was second generation of the new area, his parents having made the journey, probably claiming a grant of land provided for John's Revolutionary War service.
There were seven children born to Charles and Anna, the first five born in Massachusetts, the last two born in St Lawrence County: Betsey, who married Anson Chamberlain, Jr.; Edward, who married Aura Hewlett; Martha, who married Ralph Chamberlain (brother of Anson, Jr); Maria, who married Dr. Elisha Gillis; Horace, who married Eliza M. Peck; William, who married Esther Fuller Packard; and Alexander, who died unmarried at about age 17.
Charles died intestate.
