Esther Bunce Stafford was the daughter of Anseline (aka Anceline) Billings and Lewis Demott Bunce. She was born April 30, 1851 in or near Beloit, Rock County, Wisconsin. When eleven months old, her father headed for California, ending up in Utah. He never returned to this family.*

By 1853 Esther and her mother were living in West Union, Fayette County, Iowa. Anseline had married Aaron C. South on January 9, 1853. Esther was part of the South family until her marriage to Lorenzo Stafford on July 2, 1869. She and Lorenzo had three known children, Gideon (1882-1937); Lovica Iola (Johnson) 1884-1959; Anna Iona (Anderson) 1886 - 1957).

Esther and Lorenzo were living in Lemont, Cook County, Illinois, at the time of their deaths and are both buried in West Union Cemetery.
