Inscription

Veteran of the Civil War from 1861-1865

"The community of Wirtz is named for Samuel Wertz. In the late 1800's. the Norfolk & Western (N & W) Railway was rebuilding the railroad from Roanoke to Rocky Mount. Wertz provided shelter for the men working near his property and, to honor him, railroad officials named the local train station after him. Unfortunately, they spelled his name incorrectly, and the area has been known as Wirtz ever since."
