The son of Jacob N. & Anna Marie (Schneider) Bentzel, in 1860, he was a laborer presumably living in Union Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall and had light hair and gray eyes. He later worked as a carpenter.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in New Oxford, Adams County, August 29, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 3 as a private with Co. C, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, August 29, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

He married Mary Rebecca Willet December 12, 1869, in Littlestown, Adams County, and fathered the children you see linked below.
