Oldest child of Andrew Edward Burns and Ada Alberta Burns, who had nine children, six boys and three girls. Taught school as young woman until she married school superintendent Samuel Clark Byers, a widower twenty-some years older and moved to his farm. Widowed at 47. Worked at Winthrop College in Rock Hill as dormitory supervisor until retirement at 65. Lived near Winthrop for rest of life. Cared for her mother "Miss Bertie" until mother died in 1968. She loved to read and keep up with the news. Raised on a farm, she liked to garden. She was also an expert at crewel embroidery and made wonderful doll clothes for her many nieces. Although she had no children of her own, she was the kind, generous, and much-loved aunt of 17 nephews and nieces. She was the glue that kept the Burns family connected until her death at 96. Her mind was sharp to the end.
