BEDFORD — Betty J. Alter, 84, 130 Edgewood Drive, Bedford, died Monday at Bell Trace. She had been in failing health for two years.

Born Jan. 12, 1924, in Bedford, she was the daughter of William J. and Edna (Guthrie) McWilliams. She married William H. Alter June 20, 1948, and he preceded her in death on May 11, 1998.

She was a former teacher at Lincoln and Parkview elementary schools in Bedford. She received her BA degree from Indiana University. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Tri Kappa, Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association, and A.A.U.W.

Survivors include one daughter, Emily Roberts and husband Randy of Bloomington; three sons: Gary Alter and wife Mary of Brownsburg, Brian Alter and wife Rebecca of Ellettsville, and Gregory Alter and wife Leila of Bedford; five grandchildren: Lucas Roberts and wife Jenny of Ellettsville, Mitchell Roberts of Quinton, Va., Maggie Roberts of Bloomington, Ryan Alter and Holly Alter of Brownsburg; and one great-grandson, Reece Roberts of Ellettsville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Paul McWilliams in 1993, and James McWilliams in infancy.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Bedford. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.
