James Madison Presley, one of the pioneer settlers of Mendocino county, passed away early Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B. Edwards, after an illness of several weeks.
Preley was a native of North Carolina, and was 77 years of age. He came to California in 1859, but returned to Missouri two years later and served in the Civil War. He came to California again in 1870, and was married to Sarah M. Crawford of Liberty, San Joaquin county, who survives him.
Seven of the nine children born to the Presleys, were at the bedside of the father when the final summons came. The funeral was held Tuesday from the Christian Church, Rev. H. E. Berg officiating.
