FLANDERS, Josephine Agnes
Passed away peacefully in her Sacramento home on August 9, 2008. Jo lived a remarkable 102 years. She was born in Merced, CA on January 9, 1906, to Francis and Agnes Quierolo and moved to Sacramento with her family when she was an infant. Jo was educated in the Sacramento city school system, attending Sacramento High School and later Heald Business College. She worked at the Breuners Department Store in Downtown Sacramento where she met her future husband, Walter A. Flanders, a musician and band leader and employee of SMUD. Walt and Jo were married in November 1927 and they had one son, Walt Jr. Jo is survived by her son, Walter A. Flanders, Jr. and his wife Rena of Sacramento. Dearly beloved grandmother of Lisa Jo Flanders of Sacramento and Mark Flanders of Rio Linda. Dearest great-grandmother of Julie Kale of Seattle, Jamie Kale of Los Angeles, Katie Flanders of Sacramento, Kellie Flanders of West Sacramento, and Patrick and Richard Flanders of Sacramento. Forever remembered by numerous nieces and nephews including Charlene Green and James Queirolo, both of Sacramento, Gary Queirolo of Pacifica, Judy Tillinghost of Lodi, Angelo Queirolo of Dixon, David Queirolo and John Queirolo, both from the Sacramento area; Richard Flanders of Bend OR, Jackie Ansell of Sacramento, Kathie Semenza of San Bruno, Marge Wolfe of Folsom, and sister-in-law Valley Flanders of Sacramento. Jo was a resident of River Park for 57 years. She will be greatly missed by many friends and neighbors, best friend Dorothy Miller, and caring helpers Aida Pangan, Edith Cleto, Marilou Badua and Dorothy Terry. Jo was preceded in death by her husband and parents, brothers Francis "Bones" Quierolo and Angelo Quierolo and sister Mary Geist.

Jo and Walt loved spending time at Dillon Beach, where they purchased a cottage in 1950. Jo enjoyed making spaghetti sauce and chocolate chip cookies, watching The Lawrence Welk Show with then-young Lisa and Mark, listening to music, and cheering on the SF Giants. Jo maintained a spotless home and she was known for her beautiful garden. She was an expert at housekeeping, ironing and gardening, and gladly shared her know-how whenever asked. As a matriarch, one of Jo's highlights was the annual Queirolo family golf tournament and picnic. In 2006, family and friends gathered to honor Jo on her 100th birthday, where she received 100 pink carnations from her great-grandchildren, was presented with a Resolution of the City Council signed by the Honorable Heather Fargo and members of the Sacramento City Council, and received special messages from President George W. Bush and Laura Bush and The Honorable Doris O. Matsui.

"Grandma Josephine" will be sorely missed by all who knew her because of her experience, wisdom, and kindness.
