Walter was the son of George Washington Lady Jr. and Florence S. Snodgrass. He came to Illinois about 1924, where he married Edith Alma Short 23 March 1933 at White Hall, Illinois. He and Edith had three daughters: Janet Carol, Joan Kay and Peggy Jo. They relocated to Bloomington-Normal about 1946. After Edith died in 1955, he devoted himself to raising his daughters before remarrying.

Walter served twice in the armed services. He enlisted in 1928, and was then drafted in 1943. He was a devoted Christian of the Baptist persuasion.
