Gladys Smith was born to Dr.Thomas R Loer and Louise Henne Loer in 1899. She married Charles Louis Smith, and they had two children Jan Smith (later became Jan Anderson) and Charles L Smith Jr.In 1934 her husband was elected to Mayor of Seattle in Washington State. Gladys was a very spirited woman, who held her own license to fly airplanes. She always liked to fly around the state on weekends. In 1935 she crashed landed her small aircraft in Hanford Nuclear Reservation, and caused quite a stir. She landed her plane upside down, but walked away without a scratch. After being held for several hours by authorities at the Nuclear Reservation, while they checked her identity, she was finally released to go on about her way. It was front page news in all of the Washington papers the next day.
Gladys and Charles had a ocean cottage at Ocean Shores where they spent their summers, and later on in their years they bought a place in Arizona. Later in their lives they solely lived in Arizona because the weather was drier and much more mild.
