Eli Coddington, Past 80, Dies at Bridgeville
Eli Coddington, a veteran of the Civil War, died on Saturday night at his home at Bridgeville, at the age of nearly 81 years. He had been in poor health for several years.
He was the son of Bloom Coddington and Eliza Terwilliger Coddington and was born on the 13th of November, 1840. On the 11th day of August, 1862, before he was 22, he enlisted as a private in Co. F, 124th New York Infantry, and served for three years. He was honorably discharged on May 13, 1865, at Washington, D.C., and came back to his home. For thirty years he had resided at Bridgeville.
Two years before he enlisted he married Elizabeth Smalley Coles, who, with one son and two daughters, survives him. The children are Frank C. Coddington, of Bridgeville; Mrs. John Keyes, of Brooklyn, and Mrs. Addie Woodruff, of Roselle Park, N.J.
The funeral was from his late home on Wednesday and burial was at Rock Hill.
Mr. Coddington was a good soldier. He never feared to do his duty and Uncle Sam in his later life recognized his worthiness by giving him a pension, and he was just as good a citizen as he was a soldier.
--Monticello (NY) Republican Watchman, Friday, March 4, 1921, page 5
Death was due to chronic cystitis. He was aged 80 years, 3 months and 13 days.
