A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Bloomfield August 20, 1861, with Co. D, 47th Pa Inf, at the rank of private. First detached to the signal corps and then transferred there on October 13, 1863. Arrested June 20, 1864, and confined for "conduct unbecoming." Released by mistake, the army rearrested him and freed him only when his term of enlistment expired on September 29, 1864. His discharge was honorable.
After the war, his ministry typically had him on the move. He lived in Beavertown, Snyder Co., two different places in Maryland, in Lewisberry, York County, and he died in East Berlin, Adams County. In 1890, the widowed Anna lived in Hamilton Township, Adams County. She later married Rev. B. F. Hall and moved to Eureka, Illinois.
