His obituary information was generously shared with me by a Find.a.Grave contributor Brandon O'Rear. Sad though it is to read, it is still part of our Pickens history. Nobody can really say they know what a person is thinking or feeling during their darkest moments such as that which lead to his suicide.

J.T. PICKENS

Was Postmaster of the Pickens, Oklahoma, Postoffice

On the afternoon of August 30th, J. T. Pickens came out on the front porch of his store seven miles west of Ida, and shot himself through the head, dying instantly. This was done in the presence of three bystanders and in a few minutes at least twenty persons were on the scene of the tragedy.

Mr. Pickens was the "whole thing" at Pickens postoffice. He was postmaster, merchant, saw mill man and farmer. He had lived there about for about ten years and was the founder of the post office. Last winter he went into bankruptcy and after that was settled went to merchandising. No request was held, as there was no suspicion of foul play.

Mr. Pickens had been acting queerly for several days and the day before the tragedy, tried to take a dose of strychnine, but was prevented.
