A 22-year veteran of the United States Army - 1950 until 1972 - he served two tours of duty in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. After leaving the military, he spent the rest of his career working as a chief steward on offshore drilling rigs.
Mr. Batson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annette Crain Batson; daughters Teresa Batson Hensley and husband, Ron; Karen Batson Mueller and Husband, Gary, and Melanie Batson Carney and husband, Roy; stepdaughter Sharon Hines and stepsons Willie Hines, wife Vanise and their children: Devan and Grayson; stepson Jeff Hines, wife Cassandra and their children: Kayla and Thomas; grandchildren Gabriel and his wife Carey, Nathaniel, Luke, Matthew, Joshua and Adam Hensley; Justin and John Mueller; Nicholas and Jessica Koropathy; Kyle and Kayla Carney; great-granchildren Blake, Lauren and Jalen Hensley, Aiden Mueller; sisters-in-law, Alice Terrell, Elgie Taylor, Doris Crain; brothers-in-law Lester, Johnny and Richard Crain; and loving family friend June Hernandez and children Julianna and Julian.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Eula Mae and daughter Deborah Lynn Batson. He was the youngest of six brothers and three sisters, all preceding him in death.
Visitation was Saturday and from 9 a.m. today at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home Chapel until the time of service at 2 p.m.
Rev. Ron Hensley will officiate and burial with full military honors by Magic City American Legion Post No. 24 will be in the veteran's plot at Ponemah Cemetery.
