Young Mother Found in Daze As Infant Dies
Fontana War Widow's Baby Thought Choked To Death in Buggy
As if she were in a trance, her staring eyes looking into space, a soldier's widow whose baby was found dead in its carriage at her parents home in Fontana a few hours before was seized last night by officers as she wandered less than two blocks away from the house.
She is Mrs. Suzan Grobe, 24, whose husband, TSgt. Robert Grobe of the Army Air forces was shot down over Germany last April three weeks after he went overseas.
Her baby, Linda Sue, three months old, may have been strangled to death, said Coroner R. E. Williams. An autopsy was ordered.
MOTHER'S MIND BLANK
Once an attractive girl but now a broken, despondent mother on whom the stark tragedy of war has left its imprint, she could scarcely mumble her name to officers. Not even the mentioning of the baby's name, Linda Sue, aroused her from the strange daze which gripped her.
To the arresting officers, Deputy Sheriffs Roy Cornelison and Joseph Glines, she said in an almost inaudible voice that she was merely "out for a walk a long walk" when they found her shortly after 9 p.m. Her face twisted into a strange, puzzled expression, she said she had "a husband a long, long time ago." Asked by Carole Berridge, stenographer in the Fontana substation of Sheriff E. L. Shay's office, If her husband were in the war, she replied haltingly:
FAILS TO KNOW NAME
"The war is over, isn't it?" Mrs. Grobe said she had a baby but she merely stared blankly at the walls of the sheriff's office when asked the baby's name. Chief Deputy District Attorney Theodore Krumm, who failed to elicit but a few disconnected words as replies to his questioning, said the young mother would be questioned today if she has recovered from the shock she was suffering. The officers, Cornelison and Glines, came across Mrs. Grobe as she walked along a road near the home of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. R. H. Ferguson, 160 South Juniper street, as they searched a wide district for the young mother. With the officers was Mrs. Grobe's little sister, Mary, 15, who had volunteered to assist in the search. Mrs. Grobe didn't recognize the sister for some minutes.
BABY FOUND DEAD
It was Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson who found the baby, lying face downward in her carriage, as they returned home at 3 p.m. from a shopping trip to San Bernardino. Dr. O. I. Cochran of Fontana, summoned by the grandparents, (Continued on Page 2, Column 4)

said the baby had been dead for three hours.
The mother was gone.
There were no notes, nothing to indicate the impending tragedy.
The Fergusons said, however, that Mrs. Grobe had been suffering from extreme despondency and had remarked she wanted to give the baby to her sister "because I have nothing left to Iive for." Mrs. Grobe had been at their home for two weeks and yesterday was the first time her parents had left her alone for a day. The Fergusons had left at 10 a.m Shortly before their departure, Mrs. Grobe had given her baby feeding. Another, scheduled for 2 p.m., had not been prepared, said Mrs. Ferguson.
SUFFERED AT BIRTH
Mrs. Grobe, who suffered severe complications at the birth of her baby, had complained of almost unbearable headaches, the Fergusons said, which continued for days. Lately, she had been improved, they said.
Coroner Williams said there was no marks on the infant's neck to definitely indicate strangulation, although the face was discolored Dr. Cochran said a cursory examination pointed to strangulation but said an intensive examination and an autopsy would be necessary to definitely establish the cause of the baby's death. The body was removed to Ingold's mortuary, Rialto, where the autopsy will be performed today, said the coroner.
Originally a resident of Nebraska, Mrs. Grobe come to California last Christmas. Her soldier husband had visited her before he sailed for overseas duty. Since, she had resided with her aunt, Mrs. Opalle Beeks, at Venice were Linda Sue was born two months after Grobe was killed in Germany.
Mrs. Grobe was graduated from the Lutheran college at Hebron Neb., where she was an honor student.

Baby's Mother In Mystery Case Is Committed
Cause of Infant's Death May Forever Remain Mystery

Events surrounding the death of little Linda Sue Grobe may be locked forever in the deranged mind of the infant's 24-year-old mother, Mrs. Susan Grobe, it appeared yesterday as Mrs. Grobe was committed to Patton State hospital.
Although Mrs. Grobe may respond to medical treatment, it is entirely possible that she will never remember what caused the death of her baby, whose lifeless body was found in a baby carriage at the family home in Fontana last Thursday, physicians said.
MIND WENT BLANK
Mrs. Grobe, whose mind went blank a week ago as the result of grief over the death of her husband, Tech. Sgt. Robert Grobe, in Germany last April, was committed to the mental institution on an insanity affidavit by District Attorney Jerome B. Kavanaugh. The commitment was ordered by Superior Judge Frank A. Leonard, after examining doctors declared that in their opinion Mrs. Grobe is suffering from dementia praocox catatonie. They described her mental status as "blank."
CONDUCTED AT HOSPITAL
The sanity hearing was conducted at the county hospital psychopathic ward, where Mrs. Grobe has been confined since last Thursday, when she was found wandering aimlessly two blocks from her Fontana home, several hours after the baby's body was found. An autopsy failed to determine the contributory cause of death, although doctors said the baby died of acute pulmonary edema, which constitutes an effusion of water into the lungs. The autopsy physician would not say that the baby died of drowning, but it is possible that is what happened.
