Drake, Francis L. Age 24. Residence Dubuque County, nativity Wisconsin. Enlisted May 16,1864, as Corporal. Mustered June 1, 1864. Died of disease June 15, 1864, Davenport,Iowa.

Based on enlistment , his service in 12th Iowa included Ft Henry Feb 6, Ft Donelson Feb 16 and Shiloh Apr 6-7, 1862 all in Tennessee. The 8th, 12th & 14th Iowa comprised 4/5ths of the troops in "The Hornet's Nest" at Shiloh. They held their ground for 10 hours against attack after attack allowing the Union time to bring reinforcements to rear lines and snatch victory from defeat. Finally surrounded by 10 times their number and out of ammunition they had no choice but to throw down their arms and surrender only to see many of their number shot down with their arms in the air. The majority of all three regiments were captured.
