Nathan Paul McCully was born in Garrett, Ind., on Oct. 5, 1919, to Elsa Hill McCully and Claudius Nathanial McCully.
Mr. McCully was a charter member of First United Methodist Church in Muscle Shoals.
After graduating from Garrett High School, he joined the Navy and served for 10 years. Paul was stationed at Pearl Harbor and earned eight Battle Stars in the Pacific Theatre while participating at Midway, Iwo Jima and Solomon Islands.
He received both a B.S. and M.A. degree at the University of Alabama. Upon graduation, he taught school and coached at Fayette High School. While there he met and married Sue Propst and moved to Muscle Shoals, where he lived for 48 years.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sue; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Sandra McCully of Madison, Dan and Christi McCully of Atlanta, and Jeff and Paula McCully of Huntsville; and four grandchildren, Abby and Chandler of Huntsville and Sean and Casey of Atlanta.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Colbert Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Colbert Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Joyce Akridge will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Rick Almond, Tony Richter, Danny Keenum, Bill Bradford, Max Akin, Roy Michael, Chandler McCully, and Sean McCully.
