A BIOGRAPHY OF MARIETTA W. "METTIE" CARSON OVERMIRE, by Laurence Overmire, genealogist and Overmire family historian, updated Apr. 2022:

Marietta (aka "Mattie," "Mettie" or "Metta") was born Dec. 27, 1840, in Jacksonville, Illinois, the daughter of Thomas and Clea Carson. A graduate of Illinois Woman's College in Jacksonville, she worked as a teacher for 15 years in Decatur, Illinois. She was principal of the second ward school and also taught writing school.

At the age of 38, she became the second wife of Silas Overmire on June 13, 1878, in St. Louis, Missouri. Silas had five children with his first wife Mary Tobey who died at the age of 34. He and Mettie had two children. The first, Charles Carson Overmire, was born in 1879 in Decatur, Illinois. The second Jessie Starr Overmire was born in 1883 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Mettie died on Sep. 12, 1921, at the age of 80 and was buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
