Gilbert Tompkins came west from Michigan for his wife Rhoda's and daughter Ruth's health. Gilbert was head sawyer in the hardwood mill in Michigan. He was sent for by Bill Cook in 1899 to saw at the mill at Klamath on the Klamath River in California.

They were a week coming out on the train. Gilbert, Rhoda, children Wardell 17, Robert 14, Ruth 4 and Wilma a baby in arms moved into the Company town. The change benefited Rhoda but baby Wilma died.

They moved to Portland, Oregon then to Hood River and Gilbert bought a mill at the foot of Mt. Adams. His son Wardell died there from typhoid he contracted from water.
He sold the mill and went to Hood River and later to Weed, California. Friend from Cadillac put him in touch with the Ackley Brother and he came to Klamath Falls to manage the mill and saw.

They first lived in Klamath Falls then the next spring he purchased a farm on the Lost River, 15 miles from Bonanza. He continued the mill work in Klamath Falls. In 1920 word came to the farm that Gilbert had died at the mill.
