NEEDMORE, Pa. - Hazel C. Powell, 88, of Thompson Road, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg, Pa.
Born Jan. 26, 1920, in Fulton County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles Cletus and Estella Maye Mellott Garland.
Her first husband, John Floyd Covalt Sr., died Jan. 29, 1962, and her second husband, Herbert Roy Powell, died Jan. 26, 1987.
She was a retired cook from Southern Fulton School District.
She was a member of Hancock Assembly of God Church, Hancock.
She was the first woman bus driver in Fulton County.
She is survived by three sons, John F. Covalt Jr. of Hampstead, Md., and Charles L. Covalt and Roy A. Powell, both of Needmore; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by one son, Neil E. Covalt; two sisters, Jessie E. Sheridan and Hazel C. Garland; five brothers, Don L. Garland, Marshall C. Garland, Newton P. Garland, Sheridan L. Garland and Walter R. Garland.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Hancock Assembly of God. The Rev. Donald Preston will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Needmore.
The family will receive friends at the church today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The family requests that memorial donations may be made to Hancock Assembly of God Church, 431 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Hancock, MD 21750.
Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Hancock.
