George Hamilton Hench, died at his residence, in Harrisburg, last Saturday, of locomotor ataxia, having been afflicted and in a manner helpless 20 months.
He was in his 62nd year of his age and was born where William Kochenderfer lives 1/2 mile west of Ickesburg, December 27, 1834. He was the eldest son of the late Nicholas Hench.
December 24, 1863, he was married to Miss Martha Elliott, who with 2 sons and one daughter, all of them grown up, survive him. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Nicholas I., Samuel A., and Harry Hench, Anselm, North Dekota, and Willis R. Hench, Marysville, Mrs. William Wilson, Ickesburg,and Mrs. John Brickley, Americus, Kansas. The 3rd and last named of the brothers were sons of the father of all of them by is second wife.
All of the Henches available in years like many other pariots in Ickesburg and Saville township, married and unmarried, lost no time in going to the war, but George H. Hench could not go on account of his health. Nevertheless, he was drafted by an inexorable government, but could not pass the medical examination even under forced circumstances. However he succeeded in enlisting in 1863, for the emergency period, and was assigned to duty as guard to rebel prisoners. Then his brother Nicholas and Frank, were valiantly fighting at he front for the preservation of the union, Frank yielding his young life at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863.
He succeeded his father in the merchantile business at Ickesburg and removed to Harrisburg, 11 years ago, where he was associated with his brother Nicholas in the wholesale notion business until compelled by reason of ill health to retire from all active duty.
His body arrived bere Tuesday morning on Way Passenger at 9:15; the cortege included his bereft family, his brothers residing in Harrisburg and Marysville and his sister who have been at his bedside several days prior to his death. It was conveyed to the cemetery at Centre Church for interment. Funeral services were also held Monday evening at his late residence in Harrisburg. While waiting at the station here for the departure of the Newport & Sherman's Valley train, the sorrowing relatives were called upon and clndoled with by friends who formerly resided at Ickesburg.
