Ray Eller, 71, of Canyon died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, in Amarillo.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Fairview Cemetery in Pampa. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in University Church of Christ in Canyon with David Lough, minister, and Bob Shepard, elder and Bible Chair director, officiating. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon.

Ray Eller was born Nov. 23, 1936 in Pampa, to William Gensen and Bertha Wigham Eller. He graduated from White Deer High School in 1955 and then attended Abilene Christian College, where he met his future wife, Jane Parks. They were married on May 30, 1959.

Ray completed his Bachelor of Science degree in 1959 from Abilene Christian College and earned a master's degree in animal nutrition in 1961 from Texas A&M University.

During his professional career, he was an assistant professor in animal science at Oregon State University from 1961 to 1969. He then completed his graduate education in 1971 with a Ph.D. from Colorado State University. After earning his Ph.D., he became a beef nutritionist doing ration formulations for feed yards in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandle areas, as well as New Mexico and Colorado for Moorman's Inc.

From August 1998 until retirement in August 2007, he continued his beef nutritionist consulting services under the name of Eller Nutrition, LLC, and owned Eller Cattle and Grain.

He was a member of the American Society of Animal Science, American Registry of Certified Animal Scientists, Plains Nutrition Council, Texas Cattle Feeder's Association, and the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.

He moved to Canyon in 1971 after completing his doctoral degree. He became a member of University Church of Christ, where he served 27 years as an elder. He worked with the education program and most recently with the young married group.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George Eller; half-brothers, Kenneth Eller, John Noble Eller, Walter Scruggs Eller and Demas Eller; and a half-sister, Clara Eller Terry-Black.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Eller; a twin brother, Roy Eller and wife Vivian of Stephenville; three sons, Ron Eller and wife Helen of Denison, Bob Eller and wife Becky of Keller and John Eller and wife Kayce of Woodbridge, Va.; a daughter, Cindy Eller Tarbet and husband Ritchie of Petersburg; and 12 grandchildren, Jessica and Jared Eller, Morgan, Aaron, Katie and Lauren Eller, Lillian and Julia Eller and Katlyn, Trey, Megan and Madison Tarbet.

The family suggests memorials be to Church of Christ Bible Chair, WT Box 60504, Canyon, TX 79016; or to the High Plains Children's Home, P.O. Box 7448, Amarillo, TX 79114.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
