Mrs. Mary Wermerskirchen passed away at St. Gabriel's hospital at 4:50 a.m., at the age of 85 years. She was admitted to the hospital the evening before.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Val Hartmann, Mary Hartmann married Melchior Wermerskirchen in St. Benedict November 27, 1888. Mr. Wermerskirchen passed away March 6, 1937.
Mrs. Wermerskirchen, a resident of our county for the past 60 years, will be remembered as an ambitious citizen since the Village of Pierz was in its young years. Coming here from her birthplace St. Benedict, Scott County (January 27, 1867), she almost immediately undertook management of the Columbia Hotel. This was about the year 1893.
They opearted the hotel in Pierz for a period of 17 years, after which the Wermerskirchens retired in the Village.
Among the seven children surviving are Mrs. John N. Faust (Adella) and Mrs. F. J. Gilbride (Eugena), Little Falls; Mrs. J. N. Feider (Hildegard), Mrs. Tress Brown and H. T. Wermerskirchen, Minneapolis; Mrs. R. T. Healy (Angeline) and James Wermerskirchen, Pierz.
There are fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. One sister also survives. She is Mrs. Ruddy of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Mrs. Wermerskirchen was a member of the Christian Mothers Society of St. Joseph's church for many years.
The Rosary will be recited at 8:30, Friday evening, at the Virnig Funeral Home, Pierz, where friends and relatives are calling until the service hour.
The funeral rites will be conducted at St. Joseph's church, Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, at St. Joseph's church, Pierz. Interment will be in the Pierz cemetery.
