Son of Johann Christoph Lyerly and Elizabeth Christina Holtzhauser-Lyerly.

Zacharia Lyerly moved to Rowan Co., North Carolina from Virginia and served in the Revolutionary War. Between 1818 and 1819 he moved to Union County, Illinois and on to adjoining Jackson County where he applied for his Revolutionary War pension on October 9, 1832 aged 77 years. He gave his birthplace as Culpepper County, VA. He entered the service in 1777 under Captain George H. Berger and Colonel Rutherford.

Zacharia Lyrely was born June 2, 1755, in Culpepper County, Virginia. He enlisted in Rowan County, North Carolina, in 1777, for three months with Capt. George H. Berger; in 1778 for five months under Capt. Thomas Cook, and again for six months with Capt. Richard Grimes, and Col. Robert Rutherford. He came to Jackson County at an early day, settling at Dutch Ridge. He was in the battles of Reedy Fork and Guildford Court House.
