PIONEER WIFE, MY SETTLER IN STATE, DIES

Mendocino Mother of 9 Crossed Plains in Ox Cart at Age of 2

Another of the few remaining pioneers of covered wagons days passed yesterday with the death of Mrs. Harriet Susan Crispin, 77, who had lived in this region since she crossed the plains in an ox cart as a child of two.

Mrs. Crispin whose home was at Manchester, Mendocino county, died at the home of Mrs. Earl C. Frampton, one of her nine children, after an illness of several days.

Mrs. Crispin was born in Missouri, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Clay, who had come to that frontier state from their Tennessee home. As an infant she came across the plains to California, and from that time had lived in this state. Her husband, the late I.B. Crispin, was a pioneer Mendocino county rancher.

The surviving children besides Mrs. Frampton, are Mrs. J. Ralph Williams of Santa Rosa, Mrs. John Peck and Mrs. Leo Batt of Healdsburg, Mrs. George Brown of Stockton, Mrs. William Thomas of Fort Bragg, A.C. Crispin of Manchester, N.H. Crispin of Point Arena and Mrs. E.R. Wann of Berkeley.

There are also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters: Harris Clay, Willits; William Clay, Booneville; Charles Clay and Dr. L.E. Clay, Monterey; Mrs. Joe Bishop, Point Arena.

Funeral services will be held at the Manchester church in Mendocino county Sunder afternoon. The body is at the Fred Young funeral parlors in Healdsburg.
