He was born April 19, 1912, the son of Frank and Phelina May (Fisher) Groseclose at Bridgeport. He attended schools at Green Valley, Jordan Creek and Bridgeport. He moved with his parents to Tacoma, where he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1930. He continued his education at the Oregon Institute of Technology.
Mr. Gross moved to Grand Coulee, where he worked on the construction of Grand Coulee Dam. He later worked for the Howe Sound Mine at Holden Village.
He married Carol Wittig Bechtol on Feb. 28, 1942, at Camas. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the European Theater with the 20th Armored Division. He moved to Mansfield following his honorable discharge and worked for the Douglas County Road Department. He later was owner and operator of a service station at the Bridgeport-Valley Junction until 1957, when he returned to work for the Douglas County Road Department. He retired in 1977.
Mr. Gross was a member of the Bridgeport American Legion Post No. 218 for 50 years; a member of the Mansfield Subordinate Grange No. 883; Douglas County Pomona Grange No. 49; and the 20th Armored Division Association. He and his wife were honored as "Citizens of the Year" at Bridgeport in 1988.
Survivors include his wife, at the home; five daughters, Carolyn Eggett of Four Lakes, Patricia Murphy of Castle Rock, Mary Fritz of Puyallup, Janet Koegler of Cove, Ore., and Christine LaDouceur of The Dalles, Ore.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and five sisters.
