Pearl was the second of seven children born to Alvin Bert Tillotson and his wife Elizabeth Ann Moss Tillotson (Gesualdi) in a log cabin in Virginia, Bannock, Idaho.

She first married Carl Edward Sutton on 12 June 1929. They had two children Buhla and Gene. They divorced and then on 22 March 1935 she married Henry Franklin Hacking II. They had four children: Shirley, Sharon, Raymond, and Craig Hacking. Frank and Pearl had a very happy marriage. In Pocatello, Frank worked as a stagehand at the Chief Theater. In 1940 he operated a movie projector, a shooting gallery and an apartment building in Butte, Mt. In 1941, in Seattle, Wash., Frank worked at a theater, managed a hotel and a grocery store. During World War II the family moved to East Port Orchard. Frank and Pearl worked in the shipyards. Back In Pocatello in 1946 Frank worked as a carpenter, retiring in 1954.

Pearl's youngest sister Pauline had married Frank's oldest son Vern from his first marriage; and so their children used to call Frank and Pearl Uncle Grandpa and Aunt Grandma.
