John was the son of Jacob C. Abee and Elizabeth Cook. His siblings were Lillian Emma, Mary Alice, James Thomas, Tina, Nellie Jane, Daniel L., Wade H., Sarah Elizabeth, Rosella, Ernest Alvin and one unknown child who was born after 1880 and died before 1900.

He married Annie B. Rector who died 6 months after their daughter Ethel Mae was born.

John then married Queen Victoria (Small) Williams on March 6, 1920 in Forsyth County, North Carolina. Their children were Ray/Roy C., Elmer Jacob, John R. and one daughter who was stillborn. Queen brought into the marriage two children from her previous marriage, David Williams and Ethel Mable Williams.
