Mary Jane Rattan was the daughter of Thomas Rattan and Gillian Hill a pioneering Texas family which included 13 siblings. Her sister Annie married James Webb Throckmorton who became a Texas Governor and Congressman.

Mary married William Fitzhugh in Collin Co, Texas Sept 24, 1847. She is buried next to her husband in Fairview Cemetery in Denison. Three of her daughters rest very close by.
