A BIOGRAPHY OF ALBERT NORTON SHRIVER (1843-1898), by Laurence Overmire (great grandson), genealogist and Shriver/Burns family historian , updated June 2020:

Albert Norton Shriver was born on his parents' homestead in Clear Creek Township, then in Richland County, Ohio (became Ashland County in 1846), on September 19, 1843, the third of six sons of David and Rebecca (Scott) Shriver.

On September 3, 1872, in Ashland County, at the age of 29, he married 22-year-old Mary Belle Burns in a double wedding with his brother William who married Mary Belle's sister Tirzah.

Albert and Belle had nine children:
1) an unnamed daughter (died at 1 month in 1863)
2. Edna LoDean Shriver (1874-1927, m. Cliffton Vanostrand)
3. Alice May Shriver (1876-1932, m. Ira Leroy Landes)
4. Albert Wade Shriver (1878-1957, m. Pearl Estel Shissler)
5. William Burns Shriver (1880-1956, m. Edna Lorna Barone, Madeline Ernst)
6. Olive Rebecca Shriver (1882-1958, m. Albert H. Sites)
7. Raymond Scott Shriver (1885-1967, m. Corinna Ruth Smith)
8. John Ralph Shriver (1891-1973, m. Myrtle Mae Thompson)
9. Anna Mary Shriver (1893-1968, m. Irl Fast)

Albert was a farmer, grain and stock raiser, though perhaps not as prosperous as his father had been. He inherited a piece of land called Maple Lance, as identified on an 1874 map of Clear Creek Township. He evidently had to work very hard to make a living. As George W. Hill wrote in his History of Ashland County, "Mr. Shriver is one of the thrifty farmers of the County, and resides near the old home farm."

On February 8, 1898, Albert died of typhoid fever at the age of 54. His wife Belle took over the running of the family farm and the raising of their eight children. Albert was buried in Savannah Cemetery, Savannah, Ashland County, Ohio.

THE ANCESTRY OF ALBERT NORTON SHRIVER (1843-1898), by Laurence Overmire (great grandson), genealogist and Shriver/Burns family historian, updated June 2020:

Albert Norton Shriver shares common ancestry with former First Lady Barbara Pierce Bush and her son President George Walker Bush. Albert's GG grandparents were Revolutionary War veteran Benjamin Coe and Rachel Prudden. Albert is a descendant of their son Ebenezer Coe, who was a lieutenant in the Revolution, while Barbara Bush is a descendant of their son Moses.

Albert's Scots heritage comes down through the Pollock, Scott, and Lyons families, though in all cases the specific lineages beyond the immigrants are still unknown. Albert's grandmother was a Pollock. The Pollocks are an ancient Scottish family whose progenitor Fulbert the Saxon participated in the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and became Chamberlain to William the Conqueror. Albert's 5G grandfather, immigrant Henry Lyon, was one of the founders of the city of Newark, N.J. Family tradition says he was a descendant of the Lyons of Glen Lyon, Perthshire, Scotland. That family is related to the Queen Mother of England, who comes from the Bowes-Lyon family line.

Albert's English heritage comes down through the Coe, Prudden, and Carman families. His 9G grandfather Thomas "the Martyr" Carman was burned at the stake for his Protestant convictions during the reign of Bloody Mary. The Coe line is an ancient one which dates back to one John Coo, who distinguished himself on the battlefields of Italy as a knight in "The White Company." Sir Arthur Conan Doyle immortalized that military unit in his novel, "The White Company." Albert's 5G grandfather Rev. Peter Prudden was an Anglican priest who was persecuted in the reign of Charles I and fled to America (1637), where he became the first pastor in Milford, New Haven, CT.

Albert's German heritage comes down through the Shrivers or Schreibers. The line traces to the immigrant Nickalus who came to America from Frankenthal in the Palatinate, Germany, in 1737.

Albert's Irish heritage comes down through the Calhouns of County Tyrone, and the Dennys of County Derry. So far, we are unable to trace these lines beyond the immigrant families.
