Bertha's father Joseph was 1/8 Cherokee and the family spent years obtaining their Cherokee Tribal Rights and didn't receive it until after her father's death.
Bertha parents died when she was young during the same year and she and her youngest sister Hattie were placed in and Indian Orphanage (Cherokee Female Seminary) at Park Haven and can be found on the 1910 census there. The other brothers and sisters lived with her oldest married sister Vinnie.
Bertha met her future husband while in Park Haven and they were married in Antlers, Oklahoma on 22 Dec 1913. The had six children: 3 boys and 3 girls.
