Jacob's first wife was Kathryn "Katie" Graham (1858 - 6-16-1892)

Jacob died at the Indiana State Soldiers Home. Jacob enlisted in the Civil War as a Union Private on September 22, 1862 at the age of 18 and served in Company D, 5th Regiment, State of Ohio. He was wounded and captured in Adairsville, Georgia as a Prisoner of War on May 18, 1864. He is listed as an Andersonville Prisoner of War. He was exchanged on April 1, 1865 in Jacksonville, Florida and mustered out on June 24, 1865 by order of the War Dept. at Camp Chase, Ohio with Distinguished Service.
On January 15, 1898, Jacob applied to the Soldiers Home, in Erie County for admission. It is not stated whether he was accepted, for on May 18, 1897, he married again.
On September 25, 1900, he applied for admission to the Disabled Soldiers Home in Marion County, Indiana. On the 1900 census of Zenia Township in Green County, Ohio, two of his daughters, Mary and Bessie, were living in the Soldiers and Sailors Home for Orphans.
On December 2, 1900, Everett Rininger, a cousin, was appointed guardian to Bessie and Katie, both under sixteen years of age.
On July 15, 1902, Everett applied for Jacob's pension to support the two children.
On September 23, 1916, Rachel Rininger, Jacob's second wife and his widow applied for her widow benefits on his pension. Rachel died on January 4, 1925 and the pension was terminated.
