James Daniel was born in 1745 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He was born in an agricultural family in the western frontier part of Virginia. His parents were James and Jean (Kelso) Daniel. James married Elizabeth Cunningham in 1767 at Prince Edward County, Virginia. James was one of three brothers to marry three Cunningham sisters. James served in the American Revelation as a dragoon in the southern states. During this time his surname was established as Daniel from the different unsettled names of Daniel, Donnell, Donnel and other names. In 1791 he moved to Georgia with his family. He was an elder of the Liberty church in Wilkes County, Georgia which he was a charter member. He built his brick home in Wilkes County which stands today in Wilkes County, Georgia. He became a very large land owner in Wilkes, Oglethorpe, and Taliaferro Counties, Georgia. James was buried at the Old Salem Presbyterian Church cemetery which was sold in 1848 and became Phillips Mill Baptist Church and cemetery.
